The origins of Muay Thai: A Warrior’s art
Muay Thai, often called the art of 8 limbs, has roots dating back centuries. Originating in Thailand (of course), it was intended as a battlefield combat style used by Siamese warriors. Utilising punches, kicks, elbows, and knees, it became a powerful method of self defence and warfare.
Around the 16th century Muay Thai gained prominence when King Naresuan (who reigned from 1590-1605) trained his soldiers in hand to hand combat due to the constant warfare between Siam (now Thailand) and Burma. During this period battles often involved close quarters combat, especially if weapons were lost or damaged. Naresuan recognised the effectiveness of Muay Boran (the predecessor to Muay Thai) in giving his troops an advantage in both armed and unarmed combat. This allowed his army to dominate on the battlefield and ultimately play a key role in securing Siam’s independence from Burmese rule.
From battlefields to the ring
As Thailand modernised, Muay Thai slowly evolved into the sport we know today. In the early 1900’s, western-style boxing influences led to the introduction of gloves, weight classes, and a formal ring. By around the 1980’s, Muay Thai had gained international recognition, inspiring fighters worldwide and becoming the foundation to modern MMA striking.
Why it still matters today
Muay Thai isn’t just about fighting, for many people around the world it is a way of life and a way to provide a better life for their family. Whether you train for competition, fitness, or self improvement, you are part of a tradition that has been passed down for many generations. It teaches discipline, resilience, and respect which are all values deeply rooted in Thai culture.
